Assignment:

1. What is the relationship between economic development, urbanization and environment?

2. What is the meaning of ‘built environment’ and what is for human well-being?

3. What are the key factors influencing indoor environmental quality? What is the relation between indoor and outdoor environment?

4. What are the possible effects of indoor environmental quality on human health?

5. Search and summarize the related environmental standards, laws, policies both national and international.

6. What are the indices to evaluate the indoor environments? What are the standardized measuring methods and instruments for the indices?

7. Summarize the present environmental assessment methods on indoor and outdoor thermal environment, air quality, lighting, noise, ect.

8. What are the factors affecting air quality and which method can be taken to improve the air quality?

9. Which are the two different approaches of building energy efficiency design in the building energy standards? Please make a comparison between them.

10. What are the passive and active solar thermal energy system? What are needed for a well-designed energy-saving building?

11. What strategies can be applied to make balance between the requirement of outdoor fresh air and the energy consumption to treat it?

12. What are the possible effect of air pollution (e.g. fog and haze) in city on indoor air quality? Which aspects do it harm to human health under the condition of chronic exposure?

13. Please give some examples of urban water pollution and analyze the reasons as well as the treatments from the view of built environment field. Additionally, the examples of air pollution, and climate change and its influence on human well-being and sustainable development in the future.

Group discussion:

Topic 1: Intension and Extension of environmental quality and human well-being

Topic 2: The urbanization in China and its positive and negative effects on human health and well-being

Topic 3: Measurement and questionnaire conduction of field study in indoor environment

Topic 4: Intermittent heating and local cooling in south of China.

Topic 5: Assessment methods and improvement on indoor air quality.

Topic 6: City environment (e.g. air pollution, water pollution, climate change, ect.) and its relationship with built environment, as well as indoor environment quality.

Requirements: the students are required to be divided into several groups. And the group consists of 4~6 students. 8-10 minutes for group discussion and then the representative of each group makes a presentation of own group view.

Seminar:

Assign 1:

1. To select three different types of building, including a market, an office and a residence near the school.

2. To investigate the indoor thermal environment, air quality, lighting and noise levels and meanwhile do a small number of questionnaires on respondents.

3. To analyze the indoor environments and make a comparison with standards to check whether they meet the requirements.

4. To write a report and make a 20-minute presentation with PPT

Requirements: the students are required to be into several groups. And the group consists 8~10 students. Please state the contribution of each member in the group in the report.

Assign 2:

1. To select some different residential buildings which are built before 2000, 2000 to 2010 and built recently.

2. To do a field study of air quality in these buildings to determine the effect of decoration and furniture materials on indoor air quality

3. To find out the main pollutants and source, and the release mode of pollutants with time to give appropriate improvement according to the professional knowledge on built environment.

4. To write a report on the research result and make a 20-minute presentation with PPT

Requirements: the students are required to be into several groups. And the group consists 8~10 students. Please state the contribution of each member in the group in the report.
